This was a game where both sides made mistakes and the referee was not exempt either!  Sandbach started each half with an error, though the first half mishap only cost them a scrum back on the half way line.  Bromsgrove tried to capitalise when Horton picked up and drove forward purposely.  The ball fell to Hunt who injected some real pace and drew defenders to him.  He released the ball to Bastock, but he just failed to make it to the line. Bromsgrove kept up the pressure early on, but it was Sandbach who broke out of defence and moved the ball well out to Elliot who went into the corner to score and give the home side the lead. His conversion went wide, and the score went to 5 points to nil.

Sandbach were making the scrum difficult for the Bromsgrove forwards and they were getting more and more ball from this phase of the game. However resolute defending kept out the home side.  The next score went to Bromsgrove when Upton reduced the deficit with a long range penalty.  This score was almost immediately equalled when Sandbach were awarded a penalty and Elliot restored the difference to 5 points when his shot went over.  He missed a chance to go to 11 points to 3 when Bromsgrove were adjudged to be offside, but he made amends a few minutes later.

Further good work by the visitors got them into range again, and Sandbach coughed up another penalty, which Upton stroked over to get the scoreline to 11-6.  Bromsgrove did have the slight advantage of the sloping pitch, and it served the visitors well.  Upton intelligently kicking deep into the Sandbach half.  From the ensuing line out the ball was worked along the line with Mahoney getting in on the act at scrumhalf.  Hunt was on hand, and his pace troubled Sandbach all afternoon.  He was too hot to handle once again and sprinted into the corner. Upton’s conversion attempt failed, but the scores were level at 11- 11.  There was just time for the Sandbach winger, Leach to get his marching orders for a deliberate knock on and then the ref signalled half time.

As stated earlier Sandbach made an error at the start of the second half as well, when from the kick off they were scrambling to get the ball under control, and a lofted pass was intercepted by Tom Hunt, once again his pace was too much for the defence, and he went in under the posts.  This should have been the platform for Bromsgrove to take the game away from the hosts, but within minutes some idle chatter to the referee cost the visitors another 3 points.  With the score at 14-18 and with Sandbach working hard to get back into the lead, the referee started to incur the wrath of the home support, as his penalty awards against them kept getting Bromsgrove out of trouble.

Bromsgrove good fortune was not to last, as the slope and good ball control  by the home side began to tell.  The ball was spun out to fullback Butters who beat the defence to score under the posts and with Elliot converting the visitors lead was wiped out. 21-18.

Even though Sandbach were reduce to 14 men for the second time it was they who scored next, as Butler crashed over the line having been missed by the Bromsgrove defence.  Bromsgrove had tried to attack from deep, but a double knock-on gave the ball to Sandbach and Butler’s try was the end result! 28-18 with Elliot’s conversion.

By now Bromsgrove were beginning to tire, and when their scrum was shunted backwards, Malins was adjudged to have infringed the front row laws and was sin binned. Peter Caunt, the referee also decided the offence prevented a certain try and awarded a penalty try.  Elliot accepted the easy conversion, and the scoreboard clocked up to 35 points to 18.  Sandbach had their win and the try bonus as well.  There was time for a scrappy passage of play at the end of the match, and for Stockdale from the Sandbach second row to get a yellow card under much protest, but the home side ran out worthy winners.
