Massey-cred by the Massey Brothers

A lacklustre performance from Bromsgrove saw them go down by 4 tries to 1 against an accomplished but not spectacular Lichfield side.
Town currently seem devoid of ideas and a little low on attitude.  They started the season winning 7 games out of 9 and they have now lost 6 of the last 7 and slid from second to seventh in the table. A slide that must be halted rapidly. The spirit that saw them win several close encounters early in the season seems to be missing and they appear low on confidence. The forwards are not punching their weight and the backs seem predictable.
Lichfield won the match by doing the simple things correctly, retaining their own ball in contact, moving the ball swiftly through the hand and giving more support to their team members.
The visitors started the stronger with Bromsgrove giving away early penalties to hand over the initiative. It was only 10 minutes into the match when Bromsgrove lost their own line out and  simple handling gave them an overlap for winger Gregg Massey to score in the corner. Town tried to respond but poor ball retention cost them dear again when a promising attack faltered and Lichfield counter saw them move play to the other end of the park. A few minutes of pressure culminated in a scrum 5 metres out, the blind side was not defended well by Bromsgrove and another straight forward try was scored in the corner this time by brother Josh Massey. Grove did manage a decent spell and after a cracking tackle by Craig Mortelmans the loose ball was picked up by Sam Bastock who found support from Ed Spalding who scored the try. For the rest of the half Bromsgrove had plenty of possession but invariably managed to gift it back to the opposition. The half time score of 10 – 5 to Lichfield flattered the hosts.
The second half started positively for Bromsgrove and early pressure gave James Upton a penalty chance to reduce the arrears which he duly did.  That was the end of the good news for Bromsgrove and despite having a player in the bin, Lichfield managed the next score, again through simple passing putting Josh Massey over in the corner.  5 Minutes later the visitors scored their bonus point try with Gregg Massey scoring his second try, which brother Josh converted. The last 15 minutes of the match were closed out comfortably by Lichfield and although Bromsgrove tried hard, they did not appear to have the ideas to break down a solid visitors’ defence.
It is disappointing to see a few key players not achieving their full potential and the captain and coaches need to instil more desire into the team to avoid sliding further down the table. I’m quite sure the team and management are capable of this but need to start sooner rather than later.
Final score Bromsgrove 8 Lichfield 22.
