Bromsgrove undertook the longest away trip of the season to in form Scunthorpe, the weather was wet and the wind near gale force as the match kicked off with the floodlights already on. Clearly the message from the coaching team was to put the hosts under pressure and that’s what Bromsgrove did for the first 10 minutes playing into the wind and rain. In these conditions mistakes were a plenty but sadly for Bromsgrove two simple mistakes at the wrong time were to cost them any chance of coming away with something in the way of a result.

Scunthorpe scored the first try as Bromsgrove failed to tackle Scunthorpe’s quick open side forward. Then came the strangest refereeing decision of the day with the Home pack pushing Bromsgrove back and with both sides still on their feet and contesting the referee ran over to the posts and gave a penalty try to Scunthorpe to the amazement of both sets of players and spectators.

Despite this set-back Bromsgrove pressure yielded a penalty converted by Upton belief now ran through the side but this was to be dashed as Bromsgrove dropped the ball from the restart and gifted the home forwards position and possession which they duly converted making the half time score 19-3.

The second half started well for Bromsgrove with immediate pressure yielding another Upton penalty 19-6 with the wind and rain at their backs Bromsgrove looked good to reduce the deficit: the noisy home crowd fell silent. But once again from the restart the ball was dropped in front of the advancing home forwards who from the resulting scrum worked the ball to the left wing who slid over for a bonus point try and effectively sealing the game at 26-6. Two further unconverted tries followed late on whilst Bromsgrove had a man in the “sin bin” leaving the final score 36-6.
