North Midlands Cup Round 1
Bromsgrove (27) 32
Birmingham & Solihull (27) 37
After Extra Time

With the first round of the North Midlands Cup brought forward to Friday evening to enable more people to experience The Rugby World Cup quarter finals on Saturday, Bromsgrove had to draft in some players from our 2nd XV to cover for unavailability and injury.

The visitors started off at pace and desperate to avenge the last ditch defeat in the league only a few weeks ago. Within 3 minutes Deli went over the Bromsgrove line to dot down which was converted by Jolly. (0-7)
Bromsgrove came right back into it with a try of their own by Matt Shephard making his début on the wing. With that sort of speed it won’t be long before he features for the 1st XV more often. Unfortunately the conversion attempt bounced off the upright. (5-7) The next fifteen minutes were nip and tuck and both teams playing at an intense pace but B&S coming out the better with two converted tries but Bromsgrove closed out the half with a penalty by James Upton. (HT 8-21)
The second half resumed with Upton continuing his penalty count with two more to make it 14-21.
Bromsgrove were fighting back and the speedy wing Matt Shephard once again outgassed the defending players to make it a brace on his début, the conversion was by James Upton who had now found his kicking rhythm to make it 21-21.
The game was still being played at an intensity you’d expect from professional players. It was becoming a classic for the neutral and a nail biter for the partisan supporter. Normal time was closed out with two more penalties for each side to make it 27-27 at the whistle and Bromsgrove rueing the early conversion miss.

The first ten minute period of extra time continued in the same fashion and within seconds Paul Norris was driven over to take the lead (32-27) at the turn around. To say the second period of extra time was all the visitors would be wrong but they got the rub of the green and two more unconverted tries to make it 32-37 but Bromsgrove still maintained the pressure. However, time was against them and the final play of extra time resulted in an unplayable ball at the maul handing a narrow victory to the visitors.

This match was a classic in every sense of the word, the battle of the M42 clubs part deux! Part Trois follows in December when we next meet in the league at Finstall Park.
