Bromsgrove RFC completed their league fixture list on the 18th April with a defeat at the hands of South Leicester, the already promoted champions of Nation League 3 Midlands.  Yet the performance was similar to several we’ve seen this season, as SL pushed their score into the thirties before Bromsgrove started their customary fight back.
The game started in the bright sunshine with SL immediately on the attack.  Although the Bromsgrove forwards stole an early lineout and made some yards, a penalty was given away, and Rick Aley stepped up and slotted it over.  Bromsgrove’s kick off routine worked well from the restart and in the ensuing attack SL’s winger Connor Smith earned himself a yellow card and Bromsgrove were awarded a penalty which Critchlow dispatched for a 3 all scoreline.  This gave the home team some encouragement and they went on the all out attack, with SL having to defend manfully.  Unable to get over the line proved costly, as SL got their first try following a powerful scrum which provided some space and Aley angled a perfect cross for Gareth Kerr to run onto and score, advancing their points total to 8 as the conversion was missed. On 35 minutes Phil Horton was also carded and SL made Bromsgrove pay when their powerful forwards caught and drove the ball over the home sides’ line for another try, this time converted by Aley.  There was time for another SL player to earn a ten minute suspension before the first half ended at 3 points to 15.
It was important for Bromsgrove to start the second half well, and so they did as Phil Horton returned to touch down in the far corner expertly converted by Critchlow to give the home side some well-earned cheer! It was not to last for long as Aley extended the SL lead with a penalty. 10 -18 to SL.  More points came their way when from a well taken lineout Bromsgrove could not defend their catch and drive, and the visitors crashed over the line adding another 5 points.  All the pressure was being applied by SL, as they showed why they are champions of this league.  Their forward dominance yielding another try from a catch and drive following a line out.  The scoreline was 10 to 30, when Bromsgrove came back into the game and launched a searing attack, only for SL to snuff it out and come up with a bit a magic that saw veteran winger Kerr go over unopposed and under the posts giving Aley a simple conversion to close out their scoring at 10 points to 37. So began the Bromsgrove fight back, assisted by SL going down to 14 men for the last ten minutes.  The next score came from good work in the centre, and Millen went over for a try converted by Critchlow and the final score of the league season was scored by Bromsgrove right winger Dave Lewis, as Critchlow failed with the conversion.  Another stirring performance by Bromsgrove, who tried their best against the best side in the league.
